Should I work through the free stuff on the SBA's website before starting a business?

Answer

I don’t want to sound sour, but IMHO the SBA SUCKS big-time. If you want to be confused, belittled and made to feel like starting a business is like trying to get Sarah Palin to star in your Save the Whales documentary, then go to the SBA’s website and bury yourself in their self-righteous nonsense.

I suppose I did sound sour, didn’t I?

Seriously, I can’t understand how the SBA is anything but an obstacle to business in America. Some would say that the SBA backs small business loans and that’s a good thing. Most of the people who would say that have never applied for an SBA loan (it’s impossibly difficult.) Worse yet, loans aren’t the answer for most small businesses. They’re expensive and they push business owners to make bad decisions.

If you came to us for coaching, we’d do everything in our power to convince you to make money without getting a loan. We’re firm believers in “bootstrap business” – as in “pull yourself up by your bootstraps.” We’re going to help you see that you can build your business on it’s own revenues. In other words, you’re going to invest some of the money you make. By doing that, you don’t owe anyone anything and you get smarter about your business just as the money you really need is coming in the door. It’s a beautiful, natural approach to making money without the financial disasters common to startup businesses.

That’s our soapbox and we’re sticking to it.
