Biz-Fu-Revolution

When we think of fear, we usually imagine running from a bear or throwing ourselves off a bungee jump. But the average human being encounters that kind of fear-for-my-hide a handful of times in an entire life.

There’s another kind of fear we face a hundred times a day and pound-for-pound it’s scarier than a bear, even a bungee-jumping bear.

We’re teeth-clenching, heart-pounding, knee-knocking afraid of being WRONG. And starting a micro-business puts us directly in the path of that kind of fear every day.

I spent this week on the Hawaiian Island of Lana’i testing out the very first Micro-palooza event to be held twice yearly by Micro-business Fanatic. At the same time, I launched the Micro-business Showdown Game. As you may know, Micro-palooza is the glittering prize for those lucky enough to win the Micro-business Showdown.

Underneath all the scuba diving, mountain hiking, kayaking, beach lounging and general playing-around we did this week, I had a wicked case of the jitters.

Often, I hear entrepreneurs complain about how they don’t have the time to experiment with crazy marketing ideas.  And, they're too busy to learn how to work Photoshop.  According to them, there’s just not enough time in the day to get into social media.  Clearly, these slackers haven’t discovered the OTHER workday.

As I type this, I’m pounding See’s candy and pouring out my soul at 3:04 am (in the freaking morning, man!)  I’m working that OTHER workday like a mo-fo.

The OTHER workday starts around 9pm, after the kids are in bed dreaming about sugarplums, or Kings of Leon, or whatever kids dream about these days.

Technically, a micro-business is any business with less than five employees.  With a micro-business you don’t need to quit your day job, you don’t need investors, you don’t need letterhead or logos or a website.  You can make great dough in addition to your paycheck by launching something on a shoestring.  We call it “bootstrapping” a business.  Best of all, a micro-business can be started today and make money today.
Micro-business folk build their businesses with spare parts, odds-and-ends and stuff they have on-hand.  They “MacGyver” their businesses.  If you don’t know who MacGyver is, that’s really a bummer for you.  He’s only the coolest, most clever action hero ever conceived by Hollywood – except for Aquaman.  If MacGyver had ever tired of saving the world, he would’ve made an excellent micro-businessman.
